Things that will show you have the potential to succeed as a scientist in the future: 1) publishing your first author papers and 2) getting NIH funding. As an MD/PhD, the first thing you should think about once you join the lab is trying to get an F30. You also want to make sure you have reason to be interested in derm.I think having 2-3 dermatology research experiences with 2-3 citations out of each of those would be more than sufficient to get you competitive for dermatology as an applicant without a research year. That would be 2-3 projects with a paper, a poster, and an abstract with each of them, so like a total of 6-9 citations related to dermatology. Hi everyone, I am applying dermatology this cycle. To just lay it all out: I have 242 step 1, 262 step 2, 6 pubs, 30 research items on ERAS, AOA, a fair share of research and advocacy/leadership, did 4 derm rotations...but I am feeling so inadequate and becoming very worried that I won't match especially in this year's match.

In general, derm surgeries, such as excisions, take 30 minutes to 1 hour. Derms could be seated for 60-70% of surgeries, but there are some areas where it's just too hard/hassle to be seated (e.g. midline back, inner thighs, sometimes central face).I think it's only for submitted publications but I've encountered a similar issue. I was told not to include anything that has only been submitted unless it is an actual full project being submitted to a peer reviewed journal. Desperately needs to change to emphasize a few high quality publications, and being first or second author or 2+ in a high impact journal. Having more than 15 in derm specific pubs/abstracts just feels super dirty and at baseline I wouldn’t trust that person. But it is what it is.
