Looking at the datasheets the ECL86 comes close to the EL84, but then with max 9 Watts anode dissipation instead of max 12 Watts for the EL84. But the ECL86 is a beam power tetrode while the EL84 is (originaly) a power pentode. The triode in the ECL86 is half an 12AX7 (= ECC83). I just double checked it again and I'm still coming up with the same thing..... 116ma for two tubes, or 58ma each. Compared to the 27 in the VM amp, that's quite a disparity. The VM amp appears to run 290 volts B+, with 250 going to the plates. That's a 40 volt drop withing the windings of the OPTs! That's a LOT of DC resistance in there!!That point is now, as the amplifier works and has now been safety tested. It uses a 6AU6 in the preamp, and the 5763 in the power amp (the tube I have is actually an 5763-equivalent Philips QE03/10).
